Kevin Sweet's September Gardening Blog

As I write this, the rain outside is doing a power of good to the garden and grounds; the grass has been revived and is now a vibrant shade of green, the trees and shrubs are looking refreshed and my team are enjoying a break from the very hot weather.

It has been great this summer to see so many of our guests exploring the estate, along with their four-legged, furry family members too. With the potential of a late bit of sunshine on its way, hopefully, there are still some wonderful adventures to be enjoyed. An Autumnal picnic is a rare delight; yes, you can pick up a picnic from us, it even comes in a wicker hamper and with a blanket for your convenience!

While you are visiting, please remember my team and I are more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the estate.

Coming soon to Ashdown Park Hotel; plans are in place for a new water feature to the grounds, keep watch for its reveal! At the moment, the team and I are currently working on our winter / spring bedding plants for the hanging baskets and containers, yes it may only be September but over the next week or so I will be ordering our Christmas trees! Our Christmas brochures are now ready and around the hotel waiting for you, or click here to see our festive details online.

Wildlife and Technology

We have been partnering with a local young company, Bluedotaug, which has been working with augmented reality to create a way to experience wildlife with the aid of a smartphone.

We were delighted to be the first to trial the ‘Augmented Reality Nature Trail’ in the last week of August, please take a look on our social media profiles for photographs. This experience will hopefully be available for everyone to enjoy around our estate when they visit! We will let you know how we get on over the coming months. There's still plenty of real wildlife to see around the estate too of course! Oh, by the way, I am still enjoying the edible flowers!

Garden Tips

  1. Remove bedding plants that have gone over and carry on deadheading.
  2. Only top the grass as in most cases it is still stressed cut on a higher cut.
  3. Prune back climbers and roses and tie in as required
  4. Keep borders weeded, if weeds flower and seed you will have even more weeds next year.
  5. Check any fruit trees as some fruit will be ready to pick before the birds and wasps get to them!

Happy Gardening
